2021 Student ArtS Competition
Eligibility
Any Washington Metropolitan DC area students in sixth through twelfth grades may participate.
Grade Categories
● Lower grade students born after December 31, 2009
● Upper grade students born on or before December 31, 2009
Theme
Arts on Paper—Where East Meets West
Medium and Size
The artwork can be in any art styles on paper. No larger than 20 x 30 inches.
Artist Statement
The artist statement communicates how it relates to the theme. No more than 100 words. Type the statement on the Registration Form.
Dates of the Registration and Submitting Artwork
● One entry per student
● Submit the registration and the artwork from Nov. 15 to Nov. 30, 2021 to ArtCompetition@chineseamericanmuseum.org
● Entries submitted after the deadline November 30, 2021 will not be accepted.
Online Submission
● Save your artwork image using the following file name and type: [student last name]_[school]_grade.jpg, Example: Sun_RMHS_9.jpg
● Submit an artwork in jpg file, not exceeding 2 MB to: studentartcompetition@chineseamericanmuseum.org
Judging Criteria
The Judging Committee will review the submissions based on the following criteria:
● Interpretation of the theme
● Technical skill
● Originality, all artwork must be original ideas and created entirely by the students; any artwork that depicts copyrighted images will be rejected. No artwork depicting characters from TV shows, movies, video games or books will be accepted.
Judging and Winners
1. Each Best-in-Show winner in upper grade will receive a certificate and scholarship award of $1000, 700 and 400; each Best-in-show winner in lower grade will receive a certificate and scholarship award of $800, 500 and 200; each Honorable Mention winner in upper grade will receive a certificate and award of $100; each Honorable Mention winner in lower grade will receive a certificate and award of $50.
2. Winners’ artwork will be displayed at the Chinese American Museum DC and/or CCACC Art Gallery during the Lunar New Year period in February, 2022.
Notification of Winners and Displaying Requirements
● Winners will be notified by email on December 20, 2021.
● Displaying requirements will be sent to winners.

2020 Competition Eligibility
Chinese American K-12 students in the Washington Metropolitan DC area are eligible to enter the DC area competition. K-12 students from other states or countries can enter the open competition. Rules for the DC area competition and the open competition are the same. One entry per student.
Grade Categories
· Lower grade students born after December 31, 2008.
· Upper grade students born on or before December 31, 2008.
Theme
The theme is Our Time. We want to see what this topic inspires in our students. Artwork can be realistic or abstract.
Media Requirement
Watercolor on paper, no larger than 20”x30”.
Registration and Deadline for Entries
Entries were due 5 pm on Friday, November 20, 2020.
Entries submitted after the deadline were not accepted.
Online Submission
Save your artwork using the following file name and type: [student last name]_[school]_grade.jpg; Example: Sun_RMHS_9.jpg
Submit an artwork in jpg file less than 20 MB along with contact information:
· for students enrolled in a participating Chinese school, to the Chinese school.
· for all other students, directly to ArtCompetition@chineseamericanmuseum.org.
Judging Criteria
A final Judging Committee will review the submissions based on the following criteria:

Judging and Winners
· Sixty finalists will be selected from both lower grade and upper grade groups.
· All finalists will receive a certificate of recognition.
· Finalists’ artwork will be displayed at the Chinese American Museum DC and/or CCACC Art Gallery during the Lunar New Year period in February 2021.
· Best-in-Show winners will be selected from each finalist group.
· Best-in-Show lower grade winners will receive a scholarship award of $200 (2), $600 (2), and $1,000 (1).
· Best-in-Show upper grade winners will receive a scholarship award of $300 (3), $1,000 (2-3), and $2,000 (0-1).
Notification of Finalists and Displaying Requirements
Finalists will be notified on January 8, 2021.
Displaying painting needs to be matted and framed.
